I would almost give this 5 stars I guess, just because it s a good value, but I dislike a couple of things. I ve used this axe quite a bit processing firewood, felling, limbing, bucking and splitting mostly green wood. Most of the 1 3 of a cord I ve put up so far this year was done with this axe. You can see me using it in a few videos on youtube as user name SkillCult. I got the 28 inch version, but it came at 27 inches. You ll need to grind or file the head quite a bit. I spent about an hour or more filing the bit to get it into chopping condition. The pole was crooked and took a little filing too. It comes too blunt and pretty roughly ground. That is fine. I expect that out of a budget axe. I m just saying so you expect it. The handle I got was excellent. Straight with perfect grain orientation and very dense clean white hickory. I like the design too. It comes straight out of the handles and doesn t start to curve till about the middle. I think that is better than curving straight out of the handle. The end knob is ample and wide, very nice. After shaving the handle down, I really like using this axe for processing firewood. It s a little light, but it s perfectly capable when used well. The varnish on the handle has to be scraped off.as it is oddly slippery and strange feeling. There is nothing good about the varnish. It has to go. The paint is annoying. I realize that it obscures the very rough grinding on the head, but it has to be removed before doing any filing or sharpening and it s very tough thick paint. The thing I like the least is the aluminum wedge instead of steel. It is hard to get out and you can t cross wedge the handle if you wanted to do so. I think the wedge should be wooden, which would allow for cross wedging. Overall, I think this axe is is a good deal. Prices vary. I got mine for about 37.00 but I ve seen them as cheap as 35.00 If you can buy one in a store and pick out the best one, I think that would be very much preferable to ordering online. That way you can pick out the best handle with the best aligned head.
